This rear extension in London uses bold colour and distinctive material detailing to modernise a traditional terraced home. A vibrant orange exterior was chosen to contrast with the original brickwork, creating a clearly defined yet cohesive addition.
A mosaic element on the rear elevation provides visual balance and texture. Located opposite a neighbouring property with a taller extension, the mosaic creates symmetry and a point of interest where there was once imbalance. Black aluminium edges were added to frame the new section, offering sharp lines and a contemporary profile.
A pivot window and glass roof bring natural light deep into the open-plan living area. This architectural glazing allows direct garden views and improved airflow while forming a striking design feature.
The extension blends artistic detailing with smart layout changes to improve flow and comfort. Inside, the niche reading area and minimalist materials were selected to complement the new exterior. This compact yet impactful design shows how even modest extensions can achieve strong architectural presence through thoughtful material and light use.
