Shaded outdoor structure blending with coastal landscape

Designing a pergola in Positano might seem like a simple request, but the real challenge lay in navigating a protected coastal environment. Our goal was to create a contemporary outdoor living space that respected its surroundings while delivering modern comfort.
The site sits within a zone subject to strict urban planning regulations and natural heritage protections. We worked closely with local authorities to secure the necessary approvals. Because the pergola needed to accommodate lighting and mechanical systems for outdoor dining, we integrated these components into the structure with care.
Our design borrows from traditional Mediterranean vocabulary but simplifies the language. The rooflines are flat and minimal. Finishes are in neutral tones drawn from the natural stone of the cliffs and the sea’s blue-gray hues. Lightweight metal and treated timber provided the needed durability and structural clarity.
We maintained an open frame to maximise views and airflow. Below, we added a stone platform and custom furniture anchored in the site’s topography. Shade is achieved through layered fabric panels, allowing seasonal adjustment.
This pergola blends planning compliance, engineering, and beauty in a way that fits the Positano identity while enabling contemporary coastal living.
