Urban shade installation inspired by Mediterranean umbrellas in Barcelona
Refuge in the City is a public installation in Barcelona designed as a climate-conscious retreat. Inspired by vernacular umbrellas, the project uses lightweight wood structures draped in cotton to create shaded walk-through pavilions.
Each unit is designed for cross-ventilation, with tillandsia plants acting as natural air purifiers. The layout references urban street rhythms and invites pause and exploration.
Visible from Las Ramblas, the installation brings coastal sensibility into the city. It blends architecture with urban culture, referencing movement, refuge, and collective memory.
This installation rethinks how cities offer shelter—not just physically, but emotionally and symbolically.
