New Local Plan Adopted
Barnet Council has adopted a comprehensive Local Plan for the period 2021–2036. This plan outlines the vision for growth and development in the borough, replacing the previous plan from 2012. It sets the framework for managing development, housing, and infrastructure to meet the needs of the community.
Housing Targets and Affordable Housing
The Local Plan sets ambitious targets for housing development, aiming to deliver nearly 44,000 new homes by 2036. Of these, at least 10,600 are designated for affordable housing. This focus on affordable housing addresses the growing demand and aims to provide diverse housing options for residents.
Sustainable Design Initiatives
Barnet Council is consulting on its draft Sustainable Design and Development Guidance, aiming to promote environmentally responsible building practices. The guidance emphasizes energy efficiency, sustainable materials, and low-carbon technologies in new developments. Public consultation is planned for March/April 2025 to gather feedback from the community.
Planning Obligations Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)
In February 2025, Barnet Council adopted a new Planning Obligations SPD. This document outlines the financial and non-financial contributions required from developers to mitigate the impacts of their projects. The SPD aims to simplify and expedite the planning process, ensuring that developments contribute positively to the local community.
Community Engagement in Planning
Barnet Council has adopted a Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) in September 2025. The SCI sets out how the council will involve and engage local people, businesses, and other stakeholders in the planning process. It outlines the principles, methods, and standards for consultation and engagement regarding planning applications and policy documents.
