300-year-old barn transformed with bold colour and decor in Italy

The transformation of this 300-year-old barn entrance shows how expressive yet practical interior design can revive historical architecture. Originally stark, with exposed cement walls and no character, the entrance lacked presence. Our vision was to retain its rustic roots while introducing vibrancy, warmth, and functionality.
We began by grounding the space in tactile materials—dark wood panelling and pale stone floors offer natural contrast. Above, white domes capture sunlight and soften shadows. A petroleum green feature wall adds depth, acting as backdrop to a red armchair that becomes the entrance’s immediate focal point.
Subtle lighting and colour balance softness with structure. A white sculpture on a glass table beneath a yellow lamp adds playfulness. Wall art and sculptural touches keep the space human and lived-in, while soft furnishings and gentle circulation paths support comfort and flow.
The design respects the barn’s history while preparing it for contemporary use. It invites guests not just into a home, but into a story.
