THE BRIEF

A young first-time buyer — a musician — came to us with a small flat in Barcelona, a tight budget, and a brief that was clear about one thing: the space had to feel considered, not compromised. The flat had an underused terrace. Rather than treat it as outdoor space, we partially converted it into habitable area, bringing in natural light and gaining the square footage the brief needed without structural complexity.

Materials were chosen for texture and warmth within a strict budget. Trade access through the studio meant the quality of finishes exceeded what the same spend would reach retail. Every surface decision was made in relation to the ones around it.

THE APPROACH

The terrace conversion changed the spatial logic of the whole plan. The threshold between inside and outside became a design move rather than a boundary. Natural light came further into the flat, the living area gained depth, and the two spaces read as connected rather than separate.

Material selection on a tight budget requires more discipline, not less. Each choice had to work harder: texture where there was no budget for complexity, warmth where there was no room for excess. The palette is tactile without being decorative. Nothing announces the constraints behind it.

WHAT THIS PROJECT DEMONSTRATES

Budget and brief are not in opposition. A considered interior design approach applied to a small flat produces a result that reads as deliberate, not diminished. The terrace conversion, the material discipline, and the spatial clarity are each responses to the specific conditions of this project, not compromises around them.

The finished flat feels coherent. Nothing announces what it cost.
