Interior Design and Refurbishment, Amalfi Coast
Residential, hospitality, and historic restoration. Local expertise, international standards.
The Amalfi Coast draws a particular kind of client. Someone who has found a property that rewards real attention. A villa purchased for the long term, and worth doing properly. A restaurant that should be worthy of its location. A historic building that needs to be restored without losing what makes it irreplaceable.
The Coast is also one of the most technically demanding environments to work in. Planning, permitting, and heritage constraints are not straightforward, and the gap between what is possible and what is permitted is often wider than clients expect when they begin. The terrain, the logistics, and the supply chain require knowledge that cannot be improvised. Finding good contractors and craftspeople, navigating the Italian bureaucratic process, understanding what the heritage authority will and will not accept: none of it transfers from anywhere else.
Phasezero Design Studio has direct experience working on the Amalfi Coast across residential, hospitality, and historically protected projects. Our on-the-ground team is local. The expertise that navigates the Coast's planning and technical environment is built up over years of work here. We manage every project to UK and US professional standards: clear drawings, structured processes, honest programming, and communication in English throughout. That combination is what allows clients from the UK, the US, and elsewhere to commission serious work here without having to manage it themselves from a distance.

What makes the Amalfi Coast different
The planning and heritage environment The Amalfi Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That designation shapes the planning and permitting environment at the level of individual properties. Works that would be routine elsewhere in Italy require formal consent here. External alterations, changes of use, extensions, and additions all sit within a framework that is more demanding than most clients expect when they first start looking into it.
Historic buildings on the Coast carry a further layer of restriction, governed by the Soprintendenza, the Italian heritage authority. Engaging with that authority correctly — at the right stage, with the right documentation, and with a clear understanding of what it will and will not accept — is a precondition for any project on a protected building. Getting this wrong at the start of a project creates problems that are expensive to resolve later. Understanding it before design begins is part of the brief.
The technical environment The terrain of the Amalfi Coast places constraints on construction logistics that do not exist anywhere else. Access to sites is often limited. Materials have to arrive and move differently. Standard site management approaches, developed for flat urban sites, do not transfer. The right contractor relationships on the Coast are built over years. They are not something that can be assembled quickly for a single project, and the quality of what gets built depends on them.
The material culture The Amalfi Coast has its own craft traditions, its own ceramic and stone producers, and a material palette that has developed over centuries in response to the specific light and conditions of the place. Knowing which producers matter, which materials belong here, and which finishes hold up over time in a coastal environment at altitude is knowledge that comes from working in the place. It is the difference between an interior that feels specific to the Amalfi Coast and one that could be anywhere warm.

Who commissions work here
Villa owners from outside Italy A large proportion of the clients who commission serious residential work on the Amalfi Coast are not Italian. British and American buyers in particular have been acquiring villas here for decades, and the same question comes up consistently: how do you run a significant refurbishment project in a country whose planning system, construction culture, and bureaucratic processes you do not know?
The answer is a team with feet in both places. Local technical knowledge and contractor relationships, managed to the standards and communication style that UK and US clients are used to. That is what we offer, and it is what the clients who have worked with us on the Coast have needed.
Hospitality clients Restaurants, boutique hotels, and private hospitality properties on the Amalfi Coast exist in a competitive and visually demanding context. The properties that stand out are the ones where the design is specific to the building and the place, rather than being a generic version of what a restaurant or hotel is supposed to look like. We design interiors that belong to their location. The hospitality work we have done here starts from the building and the setting, and the design decisions follow from that reading.
Historic building restoration Some of the most significant properties on the Amalfi Coast are historically protected. Restoring them requires a team that understands both the design ambition and the technical and regulatory constraints. We have worked on protected buildings in the area under heritage authority oversight. That experience is not something we can describe in detail, but it is the background against which we approach every historically sensitive project here.
What we do
We carry projects from the initial assessment through to completion. For clients based outside Italy, that means being the single point of contact from the first question — what is actually possible on this property? — through planning and heritage consent, design and specification, contractor management, procurement, and delivery.
For a residential refurbishment, we start by understanding the building: what it is, what the planning and heritage context requires, and what the brief is asking for. We resolve those three things before any design decisions are made, because the design that works on the Amalfi Coast is the one that belongs to the specific building in its specific situation.
For hospitality projects, we work at the level of the whole spatial experience. What a guest or a diner encounters from the moment they arrive. How the space frames the view, supports the food or the stay, and makes the location feel like an asset rather than a backdrop.
For restoration, we treat the existing building as the starting point. What it has been, what it is now, what the Soprintendenza requires, and what the right materials for a building of this age in this place would be. The intervention comes from that reading.

Experience on the Coast
We have worked across the Amalfi Coast at several scales and in several conditions, including residential interiors, a hospitality project for one of the Coast's leading restaurants, and historically protected buildings that required formal heritage authority engagement.
The restaurant project involved designing a kitchen and chef's table space worthy of the food it would serve: cotto floors from Fornace De Martino, integrated joinery that conceals the kitchen's functional requirements, and a spatial strategy that gives the chef's table its own identity within the working kitchen.
The residential projects range from a focused two-room transformation on a property that was already well designed, to a complete interior delivered from start to finish, where a single material decision — the right ceramic floor, handmade to a historic formula developed on the Coast — determined the character of the whole house.
Two further projects on historically protected buildings cannot be described in detail. They are evidence of a team that has worked at a serious level with the heritage and planning environment that applies to the most significant properties in this area.

Working with us from outside Italy
Most of the clients we work with on the Amalfi Coast are based in the UK or the US. They have found a property they care about, and they want it done properly without having to spend months learning how the Italian system works.
We handle the whole process on their behalf. We assess what is genuinely possible on the property before any design commitment is made. We prepare drawings and documentation to UK professional standards. We manage the local team — contractors, craftspeople, suppliers, and the relevant authorities — and report back in English in a format that is clear throughout. When questions come up, they get answered plainly, not referred on.
The combination of local technical depth and internationally legible project management is not common on the Amalfi Coast. It is what we offer.
